AOPA Pilot Magazine Review

15 OCT 2009

Ian Twombly looks at approach plates on the Kindle DX for AOPA Pilot magazine.

"Reader Plates is my personal favorite. The company is stable and proven thanks to its offerings on previous devices. But more importantly, Reader Plates approaches the navigation differently, and in my opinion, much better. Each approach plate volume is organized as a separate book meaning navigation is done via a series of menus. First choose the book, then the state, and finally the A/FD, the approaches, the departure or arrival procedure, or the airport diagram. Then each procedure is shown and selected individually. All this navigation is easy thanks to Kindle’s cursor stick and intuitive buttons."

Note: Since the article was published Amazon has increased the Kindle auto-shutoff timeout from 10 to 20 minutes.

EXPERIMENTAL Download by Region

16 SEP 2009

The latest version of our EXPERIMENTAL Installer now supports downloading selected parts of the country.  This means you can shorten your download times by skipping Alaska, Hawaii, or any other regions of the country you're certain you won't need anytime soon.  (Or those of you in Alaska can skip the rest of the country and really slash your download times.)  Individual or multiple regions of the country can be selected for download.  And you can run the Installer again anytime to add additional regions to your reader.

Airport Facility Directories Released for the Sony PRS-505

21 AUG 2009

Reader Plates with integrated Airport/Facility Directories are now available for download through the regular Installer. Starting this month there are two Sony PRS-505 downloads for each cycle, one with the integrated A/FDs and one without.

Note: Versions with the A/FDs are approximately 20% larger and increase the download time proportionately. Also we've found some 2 GB memory cards do not have enough space available to accommodate the full versions of Reader Plates with the A/FDs. Therefore, upgrading to a 4 GB memory card may be necessary.
